Laura Flett started this petition to Drayton Valley Town Council

Drayton Valley is a community that serves an approximate 7000 municipal population and an additional 8000 people in the surrounding county. As a community, we have been hit hard by the Canadian economic recession and the change in value of the price of a barrel of oil.

As a result of the economic recession, the municipal government sees less income to deal with an increased amount of issues that have surmounted due to lower household incomes. This has led our local government to cut resources for recreational projects that can be considered wants over needs such as the closing of our children's library. Our community is also currently working to secure increased recreational opportunities such as funding for a new pool and another phase of renovations to the Eleanor Pickup Arts Center.

In a community that is not tourism based, does not have a beach property, experiences more winter days than warm summer days, and is not in the Muskoka area (Ontario), the proposed project of building a giant Muskoka chair is not a good use of our community funds. It also does not take into consideration the current costs of lumber and the upkeep of the chair over the long run.

This petition is to dismiss the proposal for a Muskoka chair in the community of Drayton Valley and to instead find alternative means that both effectively use our municipal income to provide all citizens a better quality of life, and which accurately portray who we are as a community.
