Re: Support for Appeal of Sanctions

Dear Vice President Ambler:

We, the undersigned alumni of the Omega Alpha Chapter of Delta Phi Fraternity, are writing in support of the undergraduate chapter’s petition for your reconsideration of the sanctions assessed against the organization on February 1.  We have reviewed the statement of facts and assessed sanctions provided by the College’s administration and propose that their punitive nature will eradicate more than 30 years of stewardship and leadership on campus.

Since 1987, more than 300 Delta Phi brothers have served the college as visible leaders on campus, including roles as student body presidents, honor council members, and student organization executives.  In embracing its core values of brotherhood, morality, and academic achievement, the chapter has been a continued supporter of Avalon Center and The Arc of Greater Williamsburg, raising more than $50,000 in funding to support the local community.  Delta Phi’s continued success on campus has been recognized with an award as the Outstanding Greek Chapter six times, in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2009.

Graduates of Delta Phi have gone on to achieve prestigious accomplishments, including leadership positions in law, business, politics, medicine, and academics, and are fully supportive of a culture change at the chapter.  We are committed to helping the current brothers grow through this experience and turn it into a positive learning experience instead of a terminal failure.  It is the Alumni Association’s intent to hold a Leadership and Brotherhood Retreat this spring in Williamsburg.  With accomplished alumni professionals and outside moderators, we propose working collaboratively with the administration to ensure common cultural goals are achieved.  Please allow us an opportunity to correct this situation before resorting to a lengthy suspension, causing irrecoverable damage to more than 30 years of alumni.

We hope that you share our desire to continue to promote the Delta Phi chapter as an outstanding campus organization dedicated to building young men in a positive tradition of brotherhood, morality, and academic achievement. We hope that the College will take into consideration the Chapter's full history and alumni support when deciding the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned Alumni of the Omega Alpha Chapter of the Delta Phi Fraternity
