Change Spring Branch ISD's Lockdown Procedures

My name is Lars Krosby, a student at Stratford High School. Following the events that happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the growing concern that an event like that could happen in our school has grown in the eyes of the students. Many students, including myself, now ask themselves, “What would we do if that happened to us?” and “What if it’s us next?” In a learning environment, students should be worrying about their grades, not putting their lives in danger by attending class.
What concerns me the most is that we don’t have a viable way to announce a lockdown. I think our schools should take after universities and use a mass notification system to text/email all parents, students, and teachers that signed up for the alerts. This would allow the teachers to set their class into lockdown-mode before the announcement over the intercom is made to prevent the threat from entering the classroom earlier.
Along with a mass notification system, I think our district should practice the lockdown procedures more often. Adding more of these drills will allow students and teachers to feel prepared for any such event that occurs.
I understand that you have made changes to keep us safe, but please take these problems into consideration to protect the lives of the students and teachers even further, and add the precautions to make us feel safe in our school environment.
