COVID-19 case numbers are surging in Nova Scotia, but there has been no effort made to vaccinate all essential frontline workers. Grocery stores have been an essential service since the beginning of this pandemic - everyone needs to eat. All grocery store and customer-facing employees in Nova Scotia should be considered a priority when it comes to the vaccine rollout in this province.

Customer-facing employees come into contact with hundreds of people every shift, some of whom still refuse to wear a mask, wear it improperly, or pull it down to lick their fingers or cough/sneeze. Customer-facing employees include anyone working in grocery stores, convenience stores, pet stores or pharmacies.

We have heard continuously through this third wave of cases that younger people aged 16-30 are being hit hard with these variant strains of COVID-19, but also that 16-30 year olds will be the last ones to be vaccinated. The majority of customer-facing employees in essential stores are in this age range, and waiting until the end of the rollout to vaccinate them is unacceptable. We cannot work from home, we need to be in the stores to serve customers.

As a frontline worker during this pandemic, I am urging the Nova Scotia Government - Premier Iain Rankin and Dr. Robert Strang - to prioritize all customer-facing employees during the vaccine rollout.
