Exception to allow NSD high school students to participate in state level events.
Exception to allow NSD high school students to participate in state level events.
Why this petition matters
Problem Statement:
NSD has cancelled all field trips for High School due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. This has led to the cancellation of the NSD students participating in the high school state level events like FBLA and HOSA. Decision from NSD on the upcoming TSA state level event is awaited.
Details:
NSD communicated their decision on 3/6/2020 to cancel the field trip for state level FBLA event at Spokane scheduled for 8th April-11th April 2020.
Other neighboring school districts like LWSD, BSD etc have not closed their schools and are letting their schools participate in the upcoming state events. Students have been working hard throughout the year and are motivated to participate in the state level events. NSD should not deprive their students of this opportunity. This would come to a disadvantage of students as they apply for college.
Ask from NSD:
Approach taken by NSD to participate in the state level DECA competition held on 3/6/2020 at Bellevue is highly appreciated. Students got a great experience and felt rewarded for their hard work.
Washington FBLA has confirmed that they are following the direction of the CDC, the State Department of Health, and OSPI and unless one or all of those agencies request to cancel, the state level event will progress as planned.
Accordingly we would like NSD administration to strongly consider to make an exception in writing, as required by state level organization, to allow their students to participate in state level events provided parents are ready to chaperone rather than a district chaperone.
We understand the risk involved but believe that students can be instructed to take all the precautions as per the guidelines to stay safe and healthy.
