Why this petition matters

Started by Kaitlyn Pena

As a senior in the class of 2020, I speak for the majority when I say we desperately want, and deserve to walk in a graduation. COVID-19 has taken many things from 2020 graduates, and currently schools are trying to coordinate a virtual graduation. While I am thankful our school district is trying to give us some sort of graduation, I have an idea. We can do a modified graduation that would allow for students to sit on the field, have their name called, walk across the stage, and officially be declared graduated.

I know this sounds impossible considering the rapid spreading of the Corona Virus, however, it is possible. We can split up the students into 50 at a time, give or take, and spread the chairs far enough apart to be safe. We can do this by alphabetical order, just as a normal graduation would. Each student would be given a day, a time to show up, and a limit of ten bodies to come support. There are well over 50 classrooms in a school, so each student's family could be given a classroom to stay in to watch the ceremony, which could be broadcast via projection screen to each room. If possible, students could choose one or two people to be out in the stands, still practicing social distancing, who could watch in person as their loved one graduates. While walking out, student's could march six feet apart and in an effort to keep this as least time consuming as possible, speech's don't have to be included or certain speech's could be prerecorded and shown on a screen as well. Some seniors might not want to walk, so a survey could be sent out asking who would like to walk, and by doing this numbers might go down, making this easier and more efficient. This giving us the graduation we have dreamed of for so long.

We have dedicated our entire lives to get to this monumental ceremony. Eighteen years of dedication and persistence. We have worked our absolute hardest to raise grades, keep grades up, and participate in sports, clubs, and activities. We've pushed past personal trauma and conflicts to get ourselves to this one moment, and it has now been taken from us. So, understanding a full graduation ceremony is not possible, I ask you to put this modified plan in effect to give the class of 2020 what we deserve, to walk in our graduation.
