As we continue to embark upon this journey to eradicate systemic racism in this country, I believe that it is imperative that we, the residents of Willingboro, New Jersey, remove the name, 'Levitt', from our intermediate school. Willingboro, formerly known as Levittown, was developed in the 1950's by Abraham Levitt and Sons after WWII. The problem was that Levitt refused to sell his homes to African-Americans, and the deed he conveyed forbade their sale to minorities.

To send our students of Willingboro to a school emblazoned with the name of a known racist, is both impertinent and insulting to this community that we love and value. How can we, as a community, take pride in our schools that commemorate those who hold such despicable and discriminatory ideologies? How can we instill pride and self-worth in our children, who are subjected to attend a school that bears the name of a man, who clearly did not welcome minorities in the town that bore his name? When an institution of learning is named after someone, it is inevitably suggested that the honoree served as a model for its students. This clearly is not the case with Mr. Levitt. Mr. Levitt’s views are not reflective of the values and virtues that we admire and uphold as a community, nor does it represent the future that we endeavor to construct. This is why it is paramount that we, as a community, MUST demand that the Levitt Intermediate School be renamed.
