The P.S. 86Q school community have recently learned that this vital center of community outreach and health care is scheduled to be closed at the end of March 2021. They have been serving this community for 22 years. This center is one of just a few available to the children and families in vulnerable, at-risk neighborhoods in Queens, NY.  The Briarwood/Jamaica community is one of the 33 hardest hit by Covid in the city.  As educators, health providers, and residents, living and working here, we can attest to the importance of this location to the health and well-being of the families who live nearby.

The P.S 86 site is an award-winning clinic that provides free health care to 70% of the students at the school and helps their siblings and parents navigate the health-care system as well.  This is a very culturally diverse community with many new immigrants. The center helps them with insurance and provides urgent and comprehensive care such as lab work, immunizations and referrals to specialists including mental health. In their capacity as urgent care providers, they have identified and referred cases of appendicitis sickle cell with crisis, cardiac conditions, lymphadenitis as well as the more routine cases of otitis, strep throat, Coxsackievirus, etc.

This important care contributes to the health of the community while being economically sound.  The P.S. 86 location is run with three people:  Nica Chery-Mompremier, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Ella Niyazova, Patient Care Associate, and Dr. Gayle Lashansky, a part-time Pediatrician and Endocrinologist. They serve the neighborhood with dedication, skill, and medical expertise, saving countless people from suffering more serious conditions and needing to go to an emergency room.  They educate the community and school faculty by attending monthly P.T.A. meetings where they discuss various pertinent health issues that affect the children.

The Gotham Health-NYC Health and Hospital website affirms the importance of providing families and individuals “primary and preventive health care services in their own neighborhood” and building healthy communities.  Their tagline is: “We Always Put Patients First.”  Our community has a great need for this Health Center.  Don’t allow near-term financial shortfalls to obscure the far-reaching benefits this center provides to the health and well-being of these New York City residents.  Better health at the community level adds up to long-term savings on the costs of providing health care to the people in our city.

Yours truly, The P.S. 86Q Community
