Refuse the request to de-schedule the property known as Palazzo Giannin

I the undersigned hereby call on the authorities to refuse the request to de-schedule the property known as Palazzo Giannin which MEPA considers to be of a cultural, historical and architectural value meriting scheduling due to its antiquity and architectural features. The proposed de-scheduling is unacceptable as it would lead to the destruction of the garden which runs counter to MEPA’s South Malta Local Plan policy SMIA 10 which safeguards the protection of private gardens and small palaces within these localities. This protection is fundamental to conserve these features which no longer exist in other localities not only for their heritage value but also as potential tourist attractions which are so lacking in the South of Malta.

The scheduling is also essential to protect the many protected trees in this garden that forms an important green lung in this area. The development of this garden would violate every norm of sustainability as the area is known to be prone to flooding, which will only increase once the existing trees and soil which absorb the rain are cemented over. The proposed de-scheduling is unacceptable as it would lead to the destruction of the garden which runs counter to MEPA’s South Malta Local Plan policy SMIA 10 which safeguards the protection of private gardens and small palaces within these localities.
