Change the Lice Policy at Bedford School District

Pediculosis (LICE) is a parasite that is considered a communicable disease. This communicable disease is NOT considered an illness that warrants absence from school OR proof of treatment. These parasites are running rampant through our schools and causing discomfort and itching that is unproductive to our children's education. The cost of treatment is a burden especially when the child is reinfected continuously by children whom are not being treated properly. If lice are not treated promptly and effectively, sufferers can experience chronic itching and inflamed skin. Severe long-term untreated cases of body lice can lead to infections and loss of energy.
We want the Bedford School District to change its policy on lice control. Bedford Central schools follow these procedures if students are discovered with head lice:
“Students are sent home from school as soon as the case is discovered, with treatment instructions. If parents have treated their child’s hair, they are allowed to return to school the next day but first checked by the school nurse to ensure they are lice-free. If kids have no lice, but a few nits (louse eggs) they may proceed to class. Written notification is sent home to parents about the case of lice with recommendations to do head checks of their children.”
Allowing children with head lice (live bugs/nits) to remain in school is putting our children at risk of lice outbreaks in schools. First we would like our school district to adopt a "no nits policy" whereby children who are found to have nits must be sent home from school and be treated. Secondly we would like to use BHESA funds to pay for a school wide lice check at Bedford Hills Elementary School. Lastly we would like proper lice prevention/treatment education seminars for the parents of our schools. Parents who take proper precautions everyday, and responsibly treat their children shouldn't be punished because their children keep receiving it again and again.
Please support this petition urge Dr. Manno to change our district's lice policy and properly deal with the lice epidemic in Bedford schools.
