Abby Kurszewski started this petition to Dr. Kristine Gilmore and

Hi! I'm Abby Kurszewski, a student at D.C. Everest Senior High. I'm in the Class of 2021, and I'm a mental health advocate. In fact, I hope to go to a four-year school and graduate school to become a therapist. I want to help those with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and more, because those are issues I face.

Recently, a rise in mental health awareness has allowed for the stigma around mental illness to shrink. This has created a more accepting environment around getting the help one needs. However, many factors influence the ability to find adequate help, like funding, resources, businesses, insurance, and many more. Here in Central Wisconsin, services outside of outpatient therapy are severely lacking. While North Central Health Care in Wausau, WI allows for a 24-hour maximum hold for adolescents and inpatient services for adults, there's not much for intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, or residential services. There's more inpatient programs for adults than for adolescents/youth, so it's harder to find a service that will actually take a patient.

As someone who has had to wait months for mental health treatment, I know how hard it truly is to keep waiting to finally get help. I've used services like the Crisis Text Line before and can say that they do help. At Everest, the group I'm in, Umbrella of Hope, was started in 2019 in hopes of helping students struggling with mental illness/provide support. While this is fantastic, there's still another key step that Everest could take to improve the lives of its students: adding crisis lines to the back of its IDs. Currently, the back of an Everest ID is totally blank. Let's convince the superintendent, Dr. Kristine Gilmore, to approve the addition of life-saving resources to the IDs. Wausau West did this in 2019 and had success with the addition, and in California, all schools are mandated to have crisis lines on IDs. Crisis lines on IDs will provide more convenient help and support for those that need it most, creating a better school environment. Reaching out is terrifying. This move doesn't have to be.
