In an effort to improve reading and other academic scores, Springdale School District has limited recess for elementary students to 20 minutes per day. Although this gives our children more than the minimum set by Arkansas State (90 minutes per week), this change goes against research that suggests that children need more unstructured play and activity time. In fact, research has suggested that there are several benefits, including academic achievement, to increasing recess time, and/or having more than one recess break in a day. Decreasing recess time is counterproductive.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated the following:
"Just as physical education and physical fitness have well-recognized benefits for personal and academic performance, recess offers its own, unique benefits. Recess represents an essential, planned respite from rigorous cognitive tasks. It affords a time to rest, play, imagine, think, move, and socialize. After recess, for children or after a corresponding break time for adolescents, students are more attentive and better able to perform cognitively. In addition, recess helps young children to develop social skills that are otherwise not acquired in the more structured classroom environment." Our children need more time for unstructured play. We urge the Springdale School District to increase the time allowed for recess in our elementary schools.
