Giuseppe Villani started this petition to Dr. Joseph Sawyer and

Throughout the past few years, I have heard many middle and high school students in Shrewsbury Public Schools talk about having Italian as a foreign language option.

In Massachusetts, there are over 32k Italian speakers, and many of those speakers based in Worcester County. In Shrewsbury, 15% of residents are Italian. Many students who go to SPS have parents or grandparents who speak Italian, and have always wanted to learn the language in school.

I have talked to dozens of students who have all agreed that if there was an Italian foreign language option at the high school, that they would take it in a heartbeat. I have heard various different reasons as to why, whether it be to connect with grandparents, a general interest in the language and rich Italian culture, or it being a more desired option compared to the other language choices at school.

Italian is also a romance language, which means that it is heavily derived from Latin, and isn't very difficult to learn. It is estimated that basic proficiency in the language can be achieved within 600 hours of learning, which is quite low compared to other languages.

Adding Italian as a foreign language at the high school would help students pursue dreams, push themselves out of their comfort zones, give them more options as to what to learn, and help them better connect with the community around them. Lets all work together to push the idea out of adding Italian to the list of foreign language taught at the high school
