Klein ISD students are facing uncertain times in an evolving educational landscape and consequently, Klein staff and administration should strive to be as accommodating as possible to the unique tribulations students may be encountering for the first time. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the homelives of many students have shifted drastically, with some, especially those in high school serving as the primary caretakers of younger siblings, dependent or vulnerable individuals in their home, and having unstable wifi access or reduced technological capabilities. Moreover, students are more vulnerable now than ever before, and require support, flexibility, and accommodation from educators and administrators.

The new Klein Online (KOL) guidelines that were released on November 3rd, 2020, directly contradict the aforementioned values that students, like myself, are demanding from our school district. The blatant ignorance of the Klein ISD Board of Education is making itself known to Klein students through the assumption that all students have stable home environments suitable for a camera to be on throughout the entire day, have consistent and reliable access to wifi, and do not endure daily hindrances to their education. This failure to recognize the diverse circumstances of all students in the Klein ISD school system not only serves to establish these new guidelines as incredibly prejudicial on a socioeconomic level, but invasive.

The district has already emphasized its stance on invasions of privacy, noted in 2h of the Acceptable Use Policy, also citing invasion of privacy once again as a means to not use Lockdown Browser when proctoring online exams. The new KOL guidelines directly contradict these efforts, forcing students to comply with turning their cameras on, under the guise of increasing student engagement. However, there are alternate methods that can be implemented in order to fulfill this, that have been observed to be rather successful in other districts and schools, such as simply facilitating discussion during class.

To conclude, it is vital that the Klein ISD Board of Education recognizes the contradictory behavior they are exemplifying by passing these novel regulations in addition to the educational disparity between students they are inadvertently perpetuating. Please, contact Dr. Jenny McGowen and the trustees on the Klein ISD Board of Education and stress the importance of accommodating students in unique positions who may not be able to comfortably comply with these imposing requirements. No student deserves to have the quality of their education hindered due to socioeconomic circumstances beyond their control.
