For many years, JMU's College of Visual and Performing Arts grads have enjoyed and looked forward to graduating outdoors, on the art quad in front of Duke Hall. It has been announced that this year, that ceremony will take place in the convocation center – an outdated, musty, dark, indoor arena which is hardly a home for students of the arts.

For many, one major reason to look forward to Spring graduation is the ability to walk across the stage between Duke Hall and the Music Building, and right across the street from Forbes – places we call home. It is something we look forward to for 4 years, graduating where we have worked long nights in the studio, practiced many hours, and performed passionately.

For lack of better words, having our final sendoff in a dark and lofty arena designed for basketball would leave a bad taste in our mouths – it's not what we asked for or looked forward to for years. The decision seems unreasonable, students were not asked for their input, and should rumors be true about a desire to avoid rain, this seems like a poor reason to change tradition.

We are artists, actors, musicians, designers, creatives, and performers – convo does not represent us. Please return JMU's CVPA graduation ceremony to the art quad, where it belongs.
