Fabina D'Souza started this petition to Dr. Jayamala (Minister of Women and Children Welfare department Karnataka)

This is an age old problem that children are continuing to face where the adults use their position to threaten and bully the innocent children. I have been living in a BDA locality for the past 21 years where we have a women and Children park opposite our house. I have a seven year old son who likes to cycle. There are no play grounds for children and when my son wants to play, he is forced to play on the 2 swings & 2 slides provided for all children in a nearby park or don't play at all because whenever  the park is open, it is always filled with adults & senior citizens who are so concerned about their well being & safety that they don't mind putting the poor children's safety at risk. They very insensitively & arrogantly say " We are walking here so children are not allowed to play. Tell them to go play on the road." These are our adults who we expect to be loving and caring people.

My Concerns:

1. Are children not vulnerable & at equally or much greater risk than senior citizens to get hurt on the road, get attacked by dogs ( there are 3 dogs which attack children near my house)? Should I wait for my son to get bitten and hurt or  killed by a dog to be heard?

2. Do children not have a basic right to use these public areas because they are minors? Are only adults allowed to exercise? Isn't cycling an outdoor exercise like walking and jogging? Are children not supposed to play?

3. Don't children deserve some relief & entertainment after their gruelling school schedules? They barely get to play during the week days at max about 30 to 45 minutes. The only time the poor kids can play a little longer is on weekends but the adults want to snatch even that little break time. Can we not show a little compassion towards children and their need?

4. What is always advised? That children sit indoors all day watching TV or play indoor games only or go out into the open & mingle with other children, do some physical activity where they grow stronger & healthier? How are we treating our future citizens? To involve with the community or to isolate themselves and grow into selfish individuals who don't care about anybody else?

5. Who gives these adults the right to bully and threaten children? Isn't it child abuse? Which law in our constitution  states that only adults have all the right to use public parks and that a child's need to exercise or play is not important or not even required?

I request all parents who want their children to have a safe atmosphere where they can also play or exercise without being threatened and bullied. Just like our senior citizens or any disabled or specially abled person needs to be taken care of, children also need to be cared for so please come together for these fair demands that I am raising for our kids...

1. Everyday between 5 pm and 7pm, let all parks will be prioritised for children's play time because most children come back from school only 3.30 or 4pm and will anyway not play after 7pm.

2. Saturday's and Sundays should be divided into 2 sections. Mornings for the adults and evenings for children only.

3. Another option if neither of the above is possible - Divide all parks into two sections. One only for kids to play and another for adults to walk. Everybody is taken care of that way and nobody is hurt or ignored.

Any adult who wants to come during the children's play time can do so provided they co-operate with kids as well. Adults cannot dominate parks all through the year without giving children their time & opportunity. Play time is very essential for a child's healthy and happy overall growth and development.
