Stop the Way Kambas Festival!

The Way Kambas Festival is held once a year (usually in November) in Lampung Province, Indonesia. It takes place at the Way Kambas Elephant Training Center, a facility to “tame” wild elephants. This facility is owned by the government.

Although termed a celebration, cruelty to elephants takes place. They must perform to entertain, something which is not natural to them. They perform with hula hoops. They stand on two legs. They beg for money from visitors. They give rides. They pose so that visitors take selfies. For so many elephants, their spirits have been broken and they have no more enthusiasm for life.

Our investigations in 2017 and 2018 showed that elephants sustain injury during performances. Open wounds and blood are visible.

In 2019, the Way Kambas festival will be held again. It's not too late for us to stop the abuse of elephants at this celebration.

Please tell the Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya: Stop the way kambas festival!
