Concerned Parents of Port Washington NY started this petition to Port Washington Board of Education & Superintendent Dr. Hynes

We are petitioning for a remote learning option for students in the Port Washington Public Schools. Signing this petition is not an obligation to choose remote learning, it is simply supporting those in the community who want to have that choice.

We believe this is a reasonable and prudent request. A remote learning option will provide the following benefits to students, parents, teachers, and the community as a whole:

1.      Reduces the number of students physically in the school, on the buses and improves social distancing while decreasing the impact of potential virus spread.

2.      Addresses the needs of teachers in high-risk groups by providing a possible option to teach remote learning classes.

3.      Gives families with high-risk individuals in the home a greater ability to protect their loved ones from community spread.

4.      Eases the transition to remote learning for every student should school closures be required again in the fall.

We believe that parents, as the Governor states, are the ones who will make the final decision to send their children to school. That is why we support the decision of parents who want to send their children back to school as well as those parents who want to continue their children’s education at home with remote learning. We believe that these options are well within the capabilities of our school system’s teachers and staff. We have no doubt that with proper planning and the full support of our community, Port Washington Schools can overcome the significant challenges brought on by COVID-19.

At the elementary level, one option for remote learning might be a Virtual Academy in which a remote-learning only teacher is assigned to each grade-level. Each virtual class will be comprised of students from the different schools whose families opted-out of in person instruction.

At the secondary level, students can be given the option not to attend in-person classes but continue to sign-in to live remote learning.

We strongly believe that families in the Port Washington Schools should be offered an equitable education by the District via remote learning rather than pursue home schooling path that might not align with the District’s curriculum and community or be forced to choose between their children’s education and their personal safety/health.

We respect the immense effort that the Port Washington teachers, staff, community members and administrators have worked to prepare our reopening plan for the fall. We thank you for those efforts.

We recognize there is no single solution that meets the needs of everyone. Thus we are requesting the additional option of remote learning-only so that each family may choose what works best for their situation.
