In years previously, good attendance was awarded with the option to opt out of one final for underclassmen and all finals for seniors at the end of the year. When students missed three or less times in one class they had the option to not do the final and keep the grade they would have without the final. This reward system encouraged students to not miss class and get good grades to be able to opt out of the final at the end.  This school year the Vigo County School Corporation has revoked the option for students to opt of out finals. This is counterproductive to students well being and educational goals as well as the school corporation's goals for their students. This year is our first "normal" year after Covid numbers have been on the decline. Not only are we now on Semester rather than Trimesters, with 7 classes per day instead of 5, but we are dealing with the aftermath of a worldwide decline and weakening in education due to isolation and unemployment. Students need and deserve the option for finals opt out this year because of the spike in stress levels because of Covid and also the increased course load because of Semesters. Sign this petition to implore the Vigo County School Corporation to allow for students to opt out of finals to ease students course load and encourage good attendance.
