Assault and violence at hospitals puts healthcare providers as well as other patients at major risks. This frenzied heinous crime is on the rise in India and must be condemned and curbed at all steps. Recent case of attack on doctor in Kolkata is the glaring example.

While we proclaim patient's rights, we must clearly spell out patient responsibilities for smooth , fair and just healthcare delivery. Specific responsibility of not creating violence in the hospitals should be added to the patient rights charter under Clinical Establishment Act. The charter should give a strong message of zero tolerance for  violence in the hospitals and deterrent punishment to wrong doers.
