SCARSDALE SCHOOLS ARE TOO HOT TO LEARN
Scarsdale schools are widely considered among the best in the nation. We also have some of the highest taxes. Yet, vast majority of the classrooms, gyms, auditoriums in all 5 elementary schools, Scarsdale Middle School and Scarsdale High School have no air conditioning! On sweltering days in May, June and September, kids as young as 5 are spending their days in the classrooms where the temperature may reach 100 degrees. Neither children nor teachers can effectively learn or teach in that environment, which leads to headaches, weakness, dehydration and general inability to focus or process any information.

We are Scarsdale Parents and we believe that Scarsdale Schools Are Too Hot To Learn! NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio recently announced that NYC is allocating $29 million to equip all NYC Public Schools with air conditioners. If NYC can make it happen, Scarsdale (with only 7 schools to address) should be able to step up to the plate!

We are calling for:

  • Development of an engineering plan to provide air conditioning in every classroom and public space in all 5 Scarsdale Elementary Schools, Scarsdale Middle School and Scarsdale High School by the end of 2017;
  • Conducting a cost assessment of the implementation of the air conditioning plan by the end of 2017;
  • Allocation of Budget to conduct electrical work and purchase air conditioning or install central systems for all Scarsdale schools by mid-2018;
  • Installation of all air conditioning systems by the beginning of school year in 2018.

Dr. Hagerman the Scarsdale Board of Education, please support this plan in your Budget!
