The Edmonds School District should not require additional PE classes for Student-Athletes
Why this petition matters
Many of our student-athletes in the Edmonds School District high schools are still being required to fulfill PE requirements on top of their seasons of athletic participation and competition. In a time where our students are being required to complete 24 credits to graduate, which gives them no wiggle room, it's time to look at the requirements that don't make sense and having a student-athlete also take PE doesn't make sense.
We have programs in our district that have waived PE or are on an "Alternate route to graduation" such as the IB program that has 0 PE/health requirements so why are we asking our athletes to fulfill a requirement that others do not have to do.
All of the other school districts around Edmonds (Shoreline, Lake Washington, Everett, Mukilteo) give either a PE waiver or credit to their athletes and it's HIGH TIME that Edmonds School District does the same!
What more can an athlete gain from a PE class? They are usually in great shape, have learned or are learning about proper nutrition, rest, stretching, body mechanics, focus and leadership through their athletics. They work with coaches and learn to build teams, support others, and compete, some at the top levels. There is no reason to ask these same individuals to also take PE classes for graduation.
