AACPS - Help ALL Families, students and teachers - Don't Change School Start Time!

Anne Arundel County Public Schools has proposed new start and dismissal times for the school district. Leave the school start times alone! We understand the reasoning behind wanting to make a change - studies show high school students learn more when they have more sleep.
In a perfect world (or in a much smaller school district), it would seem reasonable to start elementary through high school at the same times. Problem solved. But in our reality - this isn't possible because of the enormous cost of transportation. Not that this proposal isn't going to cost money (see below), because it's going to cost BIG MONEY.
This change makes an impact on ALL of our families, students and teachers. Not just high school students.
What happens to my middle school student who would have to start school after 9:30 a.m.? What is he supposed to do after I leave for work at 7 a.m.? Will there be a before school activity program and how will he get to it?
What about my neighbor who depends on her high school senior to be at the bus stop to pick up his 2nd grade sister? It's against the law to leave an elementary school student home alone. Does she need to be enrolled in SACC now to cover those additional hours and will there even be a SACC that can handle all of the additional students who will need a place to be housed because of the proposed changes?
Has it gotten to the point where there has to be one parent who doesn't work in order for our kids to get a public education? That might be an option for some families, but not for most. What about people who work? Most employees can't just stroll in between 10 and 10:30 a.m. after dropping off their middle schooler to class. That's not the way it works.
Those high school students that you're trying to help with this aren't getting a lot out of the deal either. It is great that they won't have to walk to the bus stop so early. It's dark most of the year when my high school junior leaves the house to walk the quarter mile to the bus stop at 6:20 a.m. It truly does stink -- but the proposed changes don't make up for it. They have athletics, band, music, drama to go to after school. A lot of them have jobs that help support their families, as well as teach them adult responsibilities. They work long hours studying for all of the AP and honors classes they take. When school gets out at 2 p.m., they are able to do these things.
And let's not forget the price tag. How much will all of this cost? $8.1 million ANNUALLY!! Do we have that much money? Is this the best way to spend tax payer dollars for education -- on transportation and software updates? How about teacher pay or up-to-date technology in all of the classrooms throughout the district? How about STEM in all schools? There are so many better options to spend $8.1 million each year than mess around with school start times.
