Millions of American Muslims celebrate Eid al Fitr and Eid ul Adha every year. Eid al Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, marks the end of Ramadan. During this holy month, a person fasts from dawn until dusk for 30 consecutive days in an effort to experience the hunger and desperation of those less fortunate. Eid al Adha, the festival of sacrifice, is celebrated at the end of Hajj, an annual pilgrimage to Mecca. During these two holidays, family members and friends travel distances to enjoy meals together, attend prayer services and give charity.
Over the past 10 yrs, the student population within the Herricks School District has experienced the most significant change in demographics. Asians account for 57% of the student population. A substantially large and growing number of these families belong to the Muslim faith. In the words of Herricks Superintendent Dr. Celano, "kids are going through an experience of having classmates of different ethnicities and different religious beliefs and it fosters a spirit of acceptance, tolerance and respect, which is a wonderful thing." In the spirit of this statement, we are requesting that Eid Al Adha and Eid Ul Fitr be accepted as official school holiday of the Herricks School District.
NYC and the Syosset SD have declared these two Muslim holidays as official school holidays in response to the demographic changes in their respective communities.
As residents of the Herricks School District take pride in the diversity of our community. In fact, it is one of reasons most families choose to move into the district. We feel strongly that the Muslim families in our community will benefit from being able to observe these holidays with family & friends near and far.
Due to the high academic demand in our community, Muslim students in Herricks school district are choosing not to observe these religious holidays in fear of decline of their performance. Please sign the petition to show your support to have Eid al Fitr and Eid ul Adha as official Herricks School District holidays.
