We, the 2020 graduates, alumni, and family members of the graduates of Indiana Wesleyan University, believe IWU has improperly handled the virtual graduation ceremony held on December 5th, 2020.  While we are grateful for the university putting something together to recognize our accomplishments, this celebration lacked two important things - intimacy and creativity. While this ceremony was streamed through YouTube, a different platform could have been used such as Zoom so we could see each other in our caps and gowns surrounded by friends and family. Sadly, we were not able to do so. In fact, the graduation link was sent out to us only three days before the ceremony was scheduled to start. This did not give us enough time to suggest another platform. Dr. Bence spoke of the importance of thinking creatively and spoke of the university’s history of “out-of-the-box” thinking. Ironically, this was mentioned during a ceremony that displayed little creativity as none of the ceremony was actually “live” as all of the video clips were pre-made.

Again, while we are grateful for the university putting something together to recognize our accomplishments, there’s nothing that can replace an in-person graduation ceremony. Graduating from college is a lifetime achievement. Because of its significance, we should be offered the opportunity to walk across the stage in a future in-person ceremony in 2021. Many institutions such as Indiana University, Northwestern University, and the University of Pennsylvania have already taken this step to welcome back their 2020 graduates for future ceremonies in 2021. If major Division I institutions can plan for a mass amount of student turnout for these future celebrations, then Indiana Wesleyan University should be able to put forth the effort to do the same. Let us walk!
