This petition has been created due to the new grading system that has been in place this first marking period in 2021. This system weights assessments at 90% of our grade, and homework and participation at 10%. This distribution of weight inaccurately reflects the learning and dedication of the students. We understand your thought process of the benefits of a consistent grading approach for all teachers in the high school. However, with the amount backlash and frustration from both faculty and students, we ask that you change the weight distribution to 60% assessments and 40% homework and participation effective 2nd marking period. With this, students grades reflect more of our understanding and dedication instead of memorizing and parroting back information. In addition, your system results in inconsistency of our grades throughout previous years. Don’t you see how the extreme weight on assessments creates an unhealthy learning environment? School should be focused on learning the material and participating. Students who struggle with test taking yet have the courage to raise their hand in class or put effort into homework should be recognized. Yet now, homework is becoming overlooked and testing has far more pressure and stress than it should. With a universal 60/40 method, all students and learning styles are represented.
