We, the students, parents and teachers of Fairfax County Public Schools, petition the Fairfax County School Board to include more Asian-American history within the required curriculum and resources for all grades K-12.

Currently, there are few historical references to the experiences of Asian-American people in the Fairfax County K-12 curriculum. As a result, many teachers and students have little knowledge of Asian-American history. This lack of knowledge contributes to a one-sided view of American history and creates the impression that Asian-American experiences are not valued.

Close to 20% of Fairfax County’s population is of AAPI descent. It is important their history to be acknowledged and that students see themselves as part of the American story. It is essential to tell all sides of historical events as well as the stories of people all across the globe. Students are not learning about the famous and hidden figures who came from Asian countries and contributed to America’s success.

If Asian-American history is included in Fairfax County’s K-12 curriculum, then more students and teachers will understand how Asian-American people have positively shaped America. This new understanding may have the additional benefit of increasing positive interactions.

The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month will begin on May 1st of 2021. During this month, as Asian-American history and stories are shared across the county, we ask that the Fairfax County School Board seriously consider changes to the K-12 curriculum to include Asian-American history.
