The rollout of iPads for my 6th grade son last year wrought unsolicited havoc in our home. The iPad is an incredible distraction for many students, even students that have high academic ability. As a high school teacher in a 1-1 iPad school, I see this distraction factor with teenagers every day. I cannot imagine there will be an overall benefit to younger students having iPad. Yes, there are cool apps that have some limited educational value. But I am not convinced they can replace a caring, engaging, professional teacher in the classroom. The Apple corporation is making millions of dollars on iPads in schools, and it is really "cool" to be an Apple school, but I am hoping HSE has the fortitude to pass on this popular but educationally questionable initiative.
