I oppose Hopi Elementary School - World Language Option

It has been proposed that Spanish be introduced into the Specials rotation.
Our wonderful PE program is a jewel at Hopi. If we lose one of the 3 teachers, our children will suffer the loss of not only a beloved teacher, but programs such as Western Day, Trekkers, and Field Day. In addition, the two remaining teachers would still be in charge of three classes of students at once for some grade levels.
Our children would only be exposed to Spanish for a total of 27.75 hours, at the most, in an entire school year. While we know that starting a foreign language at a young age is the best time, 45 minutes every 7 days will not teach our children to speak that language. In order to speak a foreign language, one must be constantly exposed, and fully immersed.
"Intensive physical exercise four hours after learning is the key to remembering information learnt," say Dutch researchers. "Exercise is known to release proteins that can boost the part of the brain related to memory, and this study suggests the timing of it is crucial." When our kids have so much pressure to perform on standardized tests and it is proposed that one outlet for them to fire those neurons that help retain information is taken away, it can only cause more stress. Taking away that physical activity and piling on more work, seems counterproductive when thinking about how children's brains work and what is best for them.
Please sign this petition if you agree that PE stays! Let us and Dr. Birdwell know why you care about our specials programming and the future of our children at Hopi.
