Overall Problems:
- The Dress Code Objectifies and sexualizes students (mainly girls)-Ex: Your collarbones and or shoulders can't be exposed, No leggings or tights, No athletic shorts, No ripped jeans above the knee)
- Students have been embarrassed in their classrooms from being publicly shamed for dress code.
- Administration (policy JICA) are the only ones who get a say if the outfit breaks the dress code or not (can make dress coding biased)
- The discrimination against culturally significant attire - Generally, Black people wear durags and headscarves
- The dress code also cuts into school time- Ex: Going home to change, or In/Out of school suspension, etc
How to fix it:
- Durags and Headscarves should be allowed (Because it's not hindering ones learning)
- No penalty for collarbones, leggings (as long as there not see through) and shoulders being out (Because we all generally have collarbones, legs and shoulders and those do not hinder learning unless you sexualize that.)
If you agree please sign this petition so we can take this to the district, remmeber we have the right for our voices to be heard!
