Restore the 5th Grade Overnight Trip to Sharpe Reservation
This petition made change with 257 supporters!
Since the 1970's, Beacon's 5th graders have finished their elementary school experience with an overnight trip to nearby Sharpe Reservation. The District is now eliminating the overnight component, citing "too much liability and exposure."
The trip is paid for through the annual school budget, which is taxpayer-funded and voter-approved. And yet, the decision to make this change was made without any input from the community.
The overnight experience is what makes this trip so special--it enhances children's social skills, increases self-confidence, and provides an opportunity that many of our kids would not otherwise have. It also creates great memories that kids will carry throughout their lives.
Please let Superintendent Walkley and the Beacon City School District know that we cannot allow yet another enriching element of our children's school experience to be dismantled by wiping out this 40-year tradition. Our kids deserve better.
