Stefan Beytell started this petition to Dr B Nzimande and

Training for staff working in the EMS is vital to the degree of quality care afforded to patients in a pre-hospital environment.  It is, however, difficult and expensive to improve the skill set of the provider due to the structure of the current curriculum.

The current qualifications above the norm is to go to a university and complete either a 2 year or a four year formal qualification.  This is not considering the short courses that the HPCSA is phasing out.

The courses are full time which means that for a period of time the staff may not be able to work.  This in turn may have a negative impact on the labour market.  It is therefore the norm that very few staff, especially those working in a private capacity or has their own SME would be able to up skill themselves.

Changing the struture of the courses, both formal and the short courses that has not yet been phased out would result in a higher quantity of EMS personell that would be able to upskill themselves and in turn provide higher quality care in the pre-hospital setting.

Theoretical elements could be done through a pre-course correspondence style structure and then the candidate would be required to attend the practical elements in class with the facilitator IF they have met the theoretical requirements (e.g. ethics).  This would reduce the labour time losses, the failure/dropout rate after the course has started but improve the flexibility of the studies and improve the care patients receive.

I ask for the consideration on this matter.
