Currently, there are no women serving via election for office for the City of Buffalo (elected positions are: Mayor, City Comptroller, 9 City Council seats). Instead, all nine City Council positions are held by men.Additionally, the last two vacancies were filled by appointment, not during an election cycle meaning that women were shut out of the process. Therefore, we must urge the Buffalo Common Council to strongly consider one of at least two women who will be applying for the appointment to the City Comptroller position that was opened up with the resignation of the former City Comptroller, Mark Schroeder, who will be leaving to take the position of State DMV Commissioner.

We are lucky to already have two qualified candidates who should be considered for this position:

Vanessa Glushefski, who is now the acting City Comptroller after Mark Schroeder's resignation, has both a CPA and is an attorney.  Her education and experience make her an ideal candidate to run the Comptroller’s office.

Barbara Miller-Williams has been a member of both the City Council and the County Legislator. As a seasoned elected official she would bring her experience and knowledge of the City budget and the work of a Comptroller.

Both of these women are excellent choices for the position because of their experience and qualifications and should be considered. Therefore, we urge the Buffalo Common Council to appoint a qualified women to the position of City Comptroller.
