I want to create a study hall that academically, physically and psychologically benefits students

Many students are bullied for their appearance, self-esteem, poor grades, causing depression leading to suicide with no stress relief outlet. Students have the resources but choose not to use them because they feel outcast, or because they’re so down about themselves they don’t want to talk to the necessary people. There are 100,000 deaths a year in the US from suicide. Every 40 seconds someone around the world dies from suicide, meaning over the last 45 years suicide rates have increased by 60%.

My Proposal: To create a study hall where students have the privilege and option to use the pool, weight-room and, or the field house to run. Swimming psychologically helps students by it stimulates brain chemicals and serotonin (which can help relax student.) and neurotransmitters. By swimming, it also releases ANP which lowers blood pressure, which will reduce stress in student. By going in the weight room you release endorphins that cause student to be more concentrated which will raise grades which benefits test scores and ACT scores. By running you release stress which will help students will cause students to naturally focus and enjoy the learning environment that they’re in. By having this athletic study hall I think that it will benefit the students of District 99 because people need to learn how to cope in the real world, which is what high school is made to do. When you are working you will not have a psychologist, social worker, or counselor 10 ft away from you. When you work you have breaks to either decompress during your lunch or you can take a break. I think this will teach students that they do have options in how they cope. With all of this said this type of study hall is not a right, it is a privilege, and since it is a privilege, it can be taken away and there will be consequences if it is misused. I personally feel that all students qualify because many of us want to have options. Our counselors, social workers are very helpful, however they help students become involved in different types of support groups, but not all students want to talk about what’s wrong but they need different ways to cope with their problem to release. Some use various athletic skills to reduce their stress and this will benefit everyone. The biggest problem with the stress level of students is that they feel alone when they’re bullied, or when something goes wrong. They want instant relief. This is such a big problem because the body's way of reacting to stress is “fight or flight.” Stress can cause many problems on your body such as: migraines, muscle tension or pain, chest pain, fatigue, upset stomach and sleep problems. It can cause your mood to change: anxiety, restlessness, lack of motivation or focus, irritability or anger, and sadness or depression. Which can also cause your behavior to change as well by: causing the student to over or under eat, angry outbursts, drug or alcohol abuse, tobacco use, or social withdrawal. As you can see stress can cause many different problems and I truly think that if we make these changes starting the school year of 2016-2017, the students will be more successful, and be excited to learn knowing that they can alleviate stress without being forced to go talk to someone.
