All students deserve a safe space...

Students, teachers, and alumni of a Catholic High School are taking a stand. What we are doing could start a movement to help give LGBT students a safe space no matter where they go to school.

My name is Liam, and I am a 17-year old-who attends Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, Iowa. When I found out recently that a track coach and substitute teacher had been denied a job for admitting they were in a gay relationship, I wasn’t surprised. Having been bullied for being gay and forced to transfer schools when it got too bad, I knew how cruel people could be. Being gay in high school is tough. Being gay in a Catholic school is even worse.

But when news spread on April 6th, 2015, that Tyler McCubbin didn’t get hired for being gay, something was different this time. People didn’t nod their head in agreement. Instead they walked out in protest. Over 200 students walked out to send the message that hate is not acceptable. They were joined by teachers, alumni and community members. As we stood outside, we stood together in solidarity - I didn’t want that safe space to disappear.

And it doesn’t have to.

We are calling on Dowling Catholic High School to allow a non-religious LGBT support club. All students deserve a safe place at school where they can feel supported and loved.

I’m just like any other student at Dowling Catholic High School. I stress about tests, take part in extracurricular activities, and volunteer to better my community. But no matter what I do, what I accomplish, I’m taunted for being gay by many of my peers. I don’t deserve to be treated in this way. Nobody does. Our school needs a LGBT support club. For students like me. For students who aren’t out. For students who feel unsafe. For students who feel scared. This move would send a message not only DCHS, but to private religious institutions across the country.

Cultivating love is a more important value than reinforcing hate.

Many say that an LGBT support group doesn’t belong at a religious school, as the current DCHS administration has.

You can also say the same that bullying, increased suicide risks, and discrimination of students shouldn't exist in a religious school as well - but it does, and is happening right here at my school.

By openly discriminating against LGBT faculty, Dowling Catholic High School has directly created a hostile and discriminatory environment for LGBT students.

They can change this by allowing an LGBT support club to form.

Join us to help Dowling Catholic High School become a more tolerable environment for all students regardless of who they are or who they love. Sign and share our petition allowing for a non-religious LGBT support group at Dowling Catholic High School.
