We request that any cell tower be placed at least 600 meters (1968 feet) from school buildings.
The Dover-Sherborn Regional School Committee (RSC) has proposed the placement of a large cell tower on school grounds. Committee members and industry representatives have not considered the known adverse health effects that have been shown in many peer reviewed studies for those that live near cell towers and other large transmission towers.
Reserarch from around the world reports significant increases in cancer rates and adverse neurological effects including sleep disruption, concentration difficulties, headaches, anxiety, depression, etc., for those living within 500 meters of a transmission tower. Furthermore, the association between childhood leukemia and chronic, low-level exposure to cell towers and other wireless devices is one reason the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, in 2011, classified radiofrequency radiation (RFR) and microwave radiation as a “class 2b possible human carcinogen.”
Last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated: “The differences in bone density and the amount of fluid in a child’s brain compared to an adult’s brain could allow children to absorb greater quantities of [RFR] energy deeper into their brains than adults. It is essential that any new standards for cell phones or other wireless devices be based on protecting the youngest and most vulnerable populations to ensure they are safeguarded through their lifetimes.”
Martha Herbert, PhD, MD, a pediatric neurologist and neuroscientist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and on staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital, wrote a letter earlier this year to the Los Angeles Unified School District about the health impacts of EMF/RFR exposure on children.
“Powerful industrial entities have a vested interest in leading the public to believe that EMF/RFR, which we cannot see, taste or touch, is harmless, but this is not true,” Herbert wrote, adding that that EMF/RFR from “cell towers can exert a disorganizing effect on the ability to learn and remember, and can also be destabilizing to immune and metabolic function. This will make it harder for some children to learn, particularly those who are already having problems in the first place.”
In addition, please take a look at this video presentation by Ray Pealer that was given at the Sherborn Library, to both Dover and Sherborn community members, about the health effects of EMF radiation emitted by cell towers and other sources.
It is certainly not in the best interest of our school or our community for children and teachers to be exposed to high levels of radiation all day, every day. In addition to health concerns, this proposed cell tower would be an eyesore for the local community, would drastically change the aesthetics of the area, and would potentially result in reduced property values.
We recognize that there is a need for better cell coverage, but this can be accomplished by the appropriate and safe placement of cell towers further from homes and most importantly, our schools, which house our most sensitive populations.
