Miriam Brooks started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives and

I purchased my home with Lennar Homes (Maryland) on October 14, 2015.

Lennar Homes states their core principles are:

“Quality - We are dedicated to being an industry innovator, and are constantly focused on providing the highest quality homes.”

“Value - At Lennar, we always strive to deliver the best possible home value to each of our customers.”

“Integrity - All of us at Lennar are committed to doing the right thing for the right reason.”

In my dealings with Lennar they are lacking in all their core principles. I have experienced many MAJOR issues with my home. Walls had to be cut out because the worker(s) took shortcuts and didn’t put in the needed support (2 x 4s) causing recurring cracks; 20+ doors replaced due to delamination; tub replacement needed due to the tub being installed with a crack; first floor had to be ripped out and replaced due to defective engineered wood that was splintering/peeling and gaps in the wood due to installer error; entire driveway replaced due to installer error causing a large cavity under the driveway; a huge crack in the foundation which caused water to seep into the basement; cabinet skin replaced because cabinet was installed cracked; unsightly drywall seams on the walls and ceiling which Lennar has stated that is what I paid for, and the list goes on and on...

Lennar ignored me for the first nine months after I settled on the home. I was forced to put a sign in my window stating, “LENNAR BUYERS BEWARE, HEAR MY STORY BEFORE YOU SIGN YOUR CONTRACT”. Only then did Lennar reach out to me to begin discussing my issues. They would fix some issues, then they would go missing in action, then ignore me, which forced me to put the sign on my car and go out and protest about their unfair practices. This ordeal has been a long and stressful process, going back and forth with Lennar, trying to get them to “do the right thing for the right reason”. I’ve had workers come in and out of my home since July 2016, many times having to do work over and over again because they sent workers that were not skilled to do the job. To date, no one can explain to me why the 2nd floor ceiling (multiple areas) keeps cracking within days/weeks or a couple of months of their countless repairs. Although, Lennar tried to convince me that it is due to normal settlement. I’m sorry, normal settlement does not occur that quickly after a repair. Lennar tried to say the air is too dry. A whole house humidifier was installed, and that theory was ruled out. Lennar had their engineer, framer and drywall contractors come out and inspect the issue and Lennar has yet to share what they found during their visit from July 20, 2018.

October 2019 will be four years living in my home and half of that time I have spent living in a construction zone (forced to breathe in unhealthy drywall/saw dust) which is RIDICULOUS for new construction. I paid $453,000 for new construction because I didn’t want to deal with an older house needing MAJOR repairs, but sadly for me, I ended up dealing with MAJOR repairs anyway.  My home is not worth the money I paid for it. There are many others in my community, neighboring communities, as well as other states throughout the U.S. with same/similar issues. Lennar Homes and other builders operating in the same manner as Lennar need to be held accountable for their actions.

The largest expense for the average person is housing. In 1975 the federal government enacted the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. We demand that a “lemon law” be enacted as a federal or state law for newly constructed residential homes because there are too many people in the U.S. that are experiencing MAJOR issues with new construction.

At the time I purchased my home Lennar was the second largest builder in the U.S.  Lennar’s net earnings reported for 2018 were $1.7 billion dollars. Homeowners pay hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars for their homes. Lennar claims they are “providing the highest quality homes” and homes with the best “value”, but my home and other homeowners homes have needed MAJOR repairs.  Too many homeowners like myself are spending our hard-earned money on what we think is going to be our dream home only to find out our dream home has turned into a nightmare.

Lennar throws up the homes, use cheap materials, cheap labor, and pocket huge profits at the expense of the consumers. The homeowners are left with no recourse to fight back due to the unfair language written by the Seller in their New Construction Purchase & Sale Agreements, an agreement that should be considered an unconscionable contract.

PLEASE help stop home builders from committing unfair practices against consumers.
