In Ontario, the history of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities is not well taught in schools. Often times, the unit is merely brushed upon or lightly covered, and only a short amount of time (around one week) is allocated to teach the unit. Very little teachers are actually offered resources to use when teaching this unit, and the short timeframe does not allow enough time to cover many important topics such as residential schools or even ongoing genocide against Indigenous communities. Additionally, many traditions and stories mentioned during this unit are merely brushed upon, lacking explanations about the importance of said traditions and why they are to be respected.

History classes have been centred around Canada's colonization and portray English Colonizers as a certain greatness for discovering this land, when in reality this land was already discovered. However, we are not taught that this land was stolen from its rightful owners. Not only that, but Indigenous tribes are so different on their own, each having their own beautiful and amazing culture that are barely touched upon in class. "Canada's" history IS the history of First Nations and to leave their history out of our classes is truly an injustice to the First Nations community. Children growing up in Canada should be learning about the strong, brave, and amazing Indigenous men and women who sacrificed so much for the privileged life most Canadians have today.

Indigenous people continue to face genocide in Canada. Children should be learning about the sacrifices, the loss that Indigenous people had to endure when Canada was colonized, as well as the genocide continuing to happen today. Canada is not the multicultural equal country it portrays itself to be. Change needs to happen.

Without the education of First Nations' history in Canada, and the damage that colonization has done to their community, young children will grow up not knowing how our country came to be, and they will not know the importance of fighting for what is right. The only way to rebuild Canada's relationship with First Nations is by educating next generations. Indigenous communities deserve to be heard, they have so much to offer.
