Equality for the beauty industry
Equality for the beauty industry
The beauty industry is being unfairly targeted in lockdown in the province of Ontario. There is no justification to keep shutting us down and destroying all the time and effort we put into our businesses. Our livelihood is just as important as having your daily Tim Hortons coffee.
20% of the industry has already forever closed their doors and this can't continue. There has been 0% deaths come from our industry due to covid-19 and a very small percentage of cases through the whole pandemic timeline. As hairstylists, we have the Ontario college of trades and public health that enforces our sanitization processes which are a lot more extensive than most "essential" stores I have been into personally. Every client I've had in the past year has been thoroughly screened and made to follow protocols and I haven't even had a low risk scare in my salon. My guests constantly tell me how safe they feel having their hair done in my salon and how much it helps their mental health through this pandemic. Even with all my efforts I have been forced to close my doors for 7 months of the last 13. The mental health of myself, my clientele and my family is holding on by a thread. It makes no sense that a big box stores can see 300 strangers an hour and we can't even see 1 a day of our trusted clientele that we know personally.
All I want is some justice and equality in this pandemic. I am all for slowing the spread of a sickness that has caused so much grief for many families, however I dont agree with how it's being done. Everything is open currently except my industry and the gyms. How is that stopping spread at all? Toronto and peel have been closed since November and they still have the highest numbers so we clearly aren't the problem. I would like one of 2 things to happen and if you agree I would love a signature to hopefully make some change.
1. If having all non essentials open at a small percentage we should also be allowed. You can argue we aren't essential, I can also argue you can make your own coffee at home, make your own meals at home and on the road from grocery store essentials only without needing fast food chains. You don't need home decor and can order clothing from home, I could continue talking forever with examples but I won't. You argue we can't stay 6 feet apart. True, however I see people not keeping their distance all the time in the places allowed to be opened. You can have cosmetic surgery and dental work done without wearing a mask. Why can't I touch your hair with both of us masked and your stylist shielded as well? The numbers speak for themselves that when we are open the numbers aren't from us we are doing our part.
2. If we can't operate I would love to see curb side for everything including essentials. Medical emergencies can be taken care of whether dental, surgies, etc but no cosmetic. Groceries, pharmacies etc. Do not need foot traffic. Screen employees and have every essential you need ordered online and put in your trunk without you needing to even leave your vehicle. For those without vehicles screen a delivery grocery/essential drop offs. Door step only no contact. Doing this for even a month only would stop the spread through businesses and everyone would be up and running in no time without a massive financial burden.
I appreciate the support and hopefully we can make some changes happen so the workforce is made as equal as possible and we can return to our normal or new normal lives soon rather than later.
