IMPORTANT UPDATE (January 11, 2022) : It is now being said Ontario students are being sent back to schools on January 17th. Many school boards haven’t made an official announcement and we are once again, left in the dark. The lack of transparency is causing confusion and stress to my peers, parents, and teachers. The government  updates on the actual implementation of masks, ventilation, and the overall progress of making schools safer have NOT been clear. We do not know if schools are safe and if changes are actually being made! A remote option for students at many schools who are worried about attending school so soon is currently unavailable/undetermined.

Recently, my aunt tested positive but she hadn’t left the house or had any visitors. It is believed she caught the virus from her child who regularly attends public school in Ontario. She is now hospitalized.

We, the students of Ontario schools are concerned about the alarming increase of cases due to the new variant, Omicron. Students have been struggling with the learning schedule modifications as it is, so moving online wouldn’t impact our already fast-paced and unpractical learning. The cases are breaking records and we are once again, re-entering the cycle. Kids and teenagers are carriers of the virus and further spread it to high-risk family members and friends. Many families will be meeting with each other during the winter break and if kids come back to school, illness will spread like wildfire. Universities and workplaces have made the decision to move online for the month of January. We don’t want to repeat what has happened before.

Schools are not safe. We don’t have soap to wash our hands, social distancing in classes, and many kids lower their masks throughout the day. Our tests and tracking are being taken away from us meaning that we won’t know who is sick of how many are sick!

They say they will hand out N95 masks to ONLY teachers, reduce class sizes, and increase ventilation. These empty promises are not helping kids as we are left with the same medical masks and sat next to 30 kids. How they will be able to reduce class sizes while we are in the middle of a term is beyond me.

Parents and health officials are making comments on our behalf but many students feel uncomfortable going back during time like this. Extend the break or move schools online until the government can come up with a solid and safe plan to protect students when we return in-person.

I don’t want to return in-person until I can confidently say school is safe for students and staff. I am scared for the health and safety of students.
