The area of Swastika, Ontario has a long rich history in the gold mining industry. This history would not be lost by changing the name to Lucky Cross. It has been claimed that it is related to a First Nations word for "Good Luck". The swastika has roots in the Sanskrit symbol known for good luck.

The Swastika Mining Company established a mine around 1908 and in 1911 they struck gold. It went bankrupt shortly after. The mine's name was changed from Swastika to Crescent Mine, while the other mine kept its name - Lucky Cross.

We propose that the town of Swastika, Ontario be changed to Lucky Cross which will allow it to maintain the history of the mines in the area. Between the years of 1911 when the company went out of business and now, the term and symbol of the swastika have taken on an offensive and violent representation. We do not believe that the people or rich history deserve such a violent word. Where the Sanskrit symbol is known as a lucky symbol and the second mine was already labelled Lucky Cross, the history, symbolism, and connection to the original place is maintained.
