Problem
In the last 16 months we have lost 32 teens and young adults to suicide in the east valley alone. This does not include the rest of the state. According to the CDC the U.S. has seen a 25% increase in suicides since 1999 and in AZ we lose someone to suicde every 7 hours. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15-34. Our state is in the top 20 for highest suicide rates losing 17.59 people for every 100,00 residents. That is not what we want to be known for. What is the most devastating; suicide is avoidable with proper treatment! If we were losing this many kids to anything else, I believe AZ would have already called a state of emergency. We must act and declare that state of emergency! This will give the state more resources to fight this epidemic.
We know that insurance parity is a huge issue, many people are unable to get the appropriate help due to health insurance limitations, lack of providers, and lack of training for key personnel who work with our kids. Calling a state of emergency would allow for more resources to tackle the suicide epidemic in AZ.
Please help us save our kids. My husband and I created The JEM Foundation after we lost our 15 year old son Jacob Edward Machovsky to suicide on January 11, 2016. We don’t want any other family to know this pain, especially because it is so avoidable. When you look at the stats see the loved ones behind the stats, see our son Jake and think if that was your son, daughter, mother, father, spouse, or loved one. Suicide doesn’t discriminate, let’s stop this so no one else has to feel the pain associated with suicide.

Thank you

Solution
Calling a state of emergency to get additional resources to combat the epidemic of suicide.

Personal story
I lost my son Jake to suicide on January 11, 2016. I lost him after he had been hospitalized twice for suicidal ideation. The hospitals only kept him for 5 days because the insurance company wouldn’t approve a longer stay. We lost our son because he didn’t receive proper treatment, that is heinous and it should never happen, to anyone.
My husband and I founded the JEM Foundation to ensure no other family feels the pain of losing a loved one to suicide. We believe that if we all come together we can solve this issue and get people the help they need and deserve. Together we can end suicide.
