We are scared. I am a public school teacher and have kids who attend public schools. Keeping schools open will only spread the virus quicker. Kids don’t effectively wash their hands. They also don’t show symptoms or the symptoms are mild. They then take the virus home to parents with high risks, grandparents, and siblings who may be battling cancer or are immune compromised. In the digital age, there is no excuse for not delivering lessons remotely.
As a parent, I will not be sending my kids to school. As a teacher, who has health risks that mean I will probably experience a severe case if I catch this virus, I have to decide if I leave my kids in the care of a substitute teacher and exhaust my sick leave or risk death. Perhaps someone can send me a CDC hazmat suit. I know that I could deliver a lesson remotely to my students better than a teacher who doesn’t know them. We can Skype or use WebEx.

Please protect our citizens and do the right thing by closing the schools.

Sincerely,

a worried mom and teacher
