Ironman Weymouth 70.3 is due to go ahead on September 20th 2020, this will no doubt cause a public health danger to the local residents, competitors, volunteers and spectators alike. I have worked as a marshal on the run course for the last 2 years and my experience gained from that would suggest there would be no feasible way to maintain social distancing, on many parts of the promenade it's impossible to do so during normal times let alone when a race is being held.
I have always supported Ironman and what the event brings to the town, that is why I volunteer each year, but like so many other large events in Dorset this also needs to be cancelled. The race struggles with popularity here as it is, to go ahead would jeopardise what good will you have and would no doubt have a negative impact on subsequent future events here in Weymouth.
Please Dorset Council, Weymouth Town Council and Ironman do the right thing, so the event can be welcomed back with good faith in 2021.
