Why this petition matters

Started by Jason Cooley

We are attempting to solve the problem of the "Tell us why" selection screen after declining an order in the DoorDash app.

Reasons why this screen is problematic:

1. The popup selection screen creates a distraction while driving, endangering the driver and others on the road.

  • After dropping off an order and driving away from a location, this screen creates a distraction while driving. Endangering ourselves and others on the road when trying to select a reason for the decline. This is hazardous as it forces us to take our eyes off the road and could result in a car accident or running into an object.

2. It wastes time between orders being accepted and fulfilled.

  • It takes about 10 seconds to interact with this screen for selecting a decline reason. Cumulatively between every driver that has to make a selection, it creates lost time. Translating into lost money for drivers and DoorDash. Also resulting in higher wait times for customers.

3. Our selection has no affect within the app other than collecting data.

  • Whatever selection I decide to choose within the selection screen has no affect on my driving experience. Whether I decide to choose the "Distance is too long" or "The store is not at my starting point", the selection does not modify the orders I receive. This creates frustration and hassle for drivers because we are allocating time for data collection purposes. This process is inefficient and creates redundancy for drivers.

4. We should not be obligated to select a reason for declining orders.

  • As independent contractors for DoorDash, it is not our obligation to provide a reason for declining orders. We agree to a contractual agreement in regards to fulfilling the order completion. However we as independent contractors for DoorDash determine what orders we decide to complete.
  • Quote from IRS.gov website in regards to independent contractors, "The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if the payer has the right to control or direct only the result of the work and not what will be done and how it will be done." IRS.gov, Page Last Reviewed or Updated: 14-Oct-2021. "Independent Contractor Defined". IRS.gov. https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/independent-contractor-defined

In conclusion:

The "Tell us why" selection screen is problematic in many ways. It creates a hazardous driving distraction for the Dasher along with other drivers on the road. It creates a time disparity for drivers and customers, cumulatively reducing the money earned for drivers and DoorDash. The selection process is redundant, inefficient and provides no benefit for the Dasher's driving experience. Lastly it is not our obligation to provide a reason for declining orders as a Dasher, it is our obligation to complete the delivery we decide to choose.

Many Dasher's agree with these assertions. Please consider the points made and consider listening to Dasher's to improve the driver delivery experience. Removing the "Tell us why" screen would benefit not only drivers, but customers and DoorDash as a corporation. Removal of the selection screen would increase profits, improve efficiency and satisfaction for all parties involved. Flashing the reduction of our percentage rating after declining an order would be an acceptable replacement for the "Tell us why" selection screen. This would be acceptable because it notifies us of our rating but does not hinder our driving experience. Thank you for your consideration and support in this matter.
