Susan G Komen for the Cure is funded for nonpartisan breast cancer awareness and prevention NOT abortion politics.
As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists since 1982, Komen has become the the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. Raising 1.9 billion dollars with programs like Race For The Cure. Their pink ribbon is a well known symbol for breast cancer and finding a cure. Their mission states that early detection is key to survival. Yet early detection for minority and low income programs and mammogram referrals are exactly what they are defunding at Planned Parenthood. In the past 2 years Komen for the Cure has granted Planned Parenthood over a million dollars for breast cancer outreach and screening receiving vocal criticism. The defunding will eliminate 170,000 early detection breast exams and 6,400 mammogram referrals as well as breast cancer awareness programs that target minority populations.
Personal Mission to Defund Planned Parenthood?
Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s new Public Policy Leader as of April 2011 is Karen Handel. Endorsed by Sarah Palin, Handel ran for governor of Georgia in 2010 and lost. On her official campaign website (see link below) she promised as governor to defund Planned Parenthood stating that she is “staunchly and unequivocally pro-life.” She even makes it shockingly clear that her pro-life agenda is more important than the low-income cancer prevention and healthy baby programs available some places only through Planned Parenthood health clinics.
“First, let me be clear, since I am pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood. During my time as Chairman of Fulton County, there were federal and state pass-through grants that were awarded to Planned Parenthood for breast and cervical cancer screening, as well as a “Healthy Babies Initiative.” The grant was authorized, regulated, administered and distributed through the State of Georgia....Planned Parenthood was the only eligible vendor approved to meet the state criteria. Additionally, none of the services in any way involved abortions or abortion-related services. In fact, state and federal law prohibits the use of taxpayer funds for abortions or abortion related services and I strongly support those laws. Since grants like these are from the state I’ll eliminate them as your next Governor.”
Of course nothing about her pro-life advocacy is mentioned on her Komen bio.
The Official Defunding Story.
Komen has explained that the defunding decision was due to the foundation's recently enacted policy to not fund organizations that are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities. Planned Parenthood is the subject of a congressional inquiry begun in September by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) to determine whether it has used federal money to fund abortions. Federal funding of abortion illegal under the 1979 Hyde Amendment.
