On December 23, Carlos was involved in a car accident, when by no fault of his own; he was hit by another car. When he was unable to produce a driver’s license, Carlos was arrested and taken to the Cobb County Jail in Georgia. Instead of being released, ICE put an immigration hold on him and he was transferred to the Downtown Atlanta ICE holding tank, where he is being told he will be deported on Tuesday, January 17th.
Carlos was brought to the United States when he was only 11 years old. He graduated from Marietta High School in Georgia. Now 24 years old, he is expecting his first child with his girlfriend. Furthermore, he is the sole provider for his family, including his mother, little brother, and two sisters, one of whom is in a wheelchair as a result of Spina Bifida.
Carlos is eligible for the DREAM Act. He also meets most of the factors listed in the Morton memo, which should merit a favorable exercise of prosecutorial discretion. If Carlos is deported to Mexico, he will be separated from his family and won’t be there for the birth of his first child.
I urge you to stop the deportation of Carlos Eduardo Lopez Morales.
