Remove Cannabis from Pre-Employment Drug Tests

My name is Jake and I have been told by several people that I am the nicest person you'll ever meet. I choose to live my life with a smile on my face, every day. I live by the golden rule of "Treat others how you would like to be treated." I have dealt with severe anxiety and depression my entire life. Using cannabis is the only thing that can make me come out of my shell, and be the person described above.

Recently, I applied for the career of my dreams, and everything had seemed to be perfect. I scored amazing numbers on each of the multiple tests that had to be taken to even consider employment. The phone interview went flawlessly, so the company decided to move on to the next steps for a live interview. The date was set and I was nervous (as anyone would be), but I continued to prepare myself for the big day. Soon enough, it was time to drive over to the office to talk to what I'd hoped to be my future bosses. The interview was nerve-wrecking, but I made it through. I then received a phone call a day later from the recruiting manager congratulating me on becoming a brand new employee! You could say I was the happiest person on this planet at that moment. Then, the words came out of her mouth. My stomach instantly turned when she had informed me that I would need to take a pre-employment drug screen at the local clinic. To make things short and sweet, I continued with the drug screening with little hopes of "passing." About a day later, I received the dreadful email informing me that my employment was rescinded.

That was it, I thought. All of my hopes and dreams have been crushed.

Many people in the United States of America participate in the use of cannabis not only recreationally, but medicinally, industrially, and religiously. To take away someones right to be employed because of a plant that grows on this earth is morally wrong. This petition will not only inform you of the benefits and facts of the use of cannabis, but will also hopefully change your mind on how it is viewed in today's society.

Using marijuana and other cannabis products is very common in this day in age. If you were to walk down a busy sidewalk in ANY metropolitan area, and ask several individuals if they partook in these activities, over 70% would answer positively.

Cannabis has brought light to the world with all of the amazing medicinal factors. It's saved a multitude of lives, including men, women, children, and who knows, maybe even your next door neighbor. Cannabis can help medicinally by treating diseases as well as improving symptoms of said diseases. Cannabis can very easily reduce nausea/vomiting which is caused as a side-effect from chemotherapy. It can also bring back appetite from people suffering from HIV/AIDS. Some other things it can also treat would be chronic pain, muscle spasms, and seizures.

Aside from the medicinal use of cannabis, everyday people like you, and me use cannabis recreationally. Recreational use of cannabis is not terrible like the world makes it out to be. The main purpose for recreational use is to obtain the psychoactive effects of the cannabis once it has entered the system. Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main ingredient in cannabis to make these said "effects" take place. Many Americans use cannabis recreationally to relax after a long day, and put themselves into a more euphoric state of mind. Cannabis also includes other compounds that may reduce certain cases of anxiety, depression, and paranoia.

The industrial use of cannabis is produced in another form that many of us know as hemp. Hemp is a very durable, soft fiber that is produced from the stem of the cannabis plant. Hemp can be very beneficial to providing everyday Americans with items ranging from construction supplies to the very clothing on our backs. Hemp can also provide us with food supplies (hemp milk, oil, & seed) as well as biofuels. Hemp has been used from country to country for the last 12,000 years.

Individuals with specific religious preferences also use cannabis in their practices. There are a multitude of religions that have practiced the use of cannabis ranging back 2,700+ years. The most recent and well-known religion to use cannabis and it's products are the Rastafarians. The Rastafari movement has embraced cannabis as a religious ritual. Aside from this, elders of the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church claims that cannabis has been an oral tradition from Ethiopia that dates back to the time of Christ.

These facts that you just finished reading above are more than enough to support the petition that I am starting today. I hope to see a change in the way people view cannabis as a whole. Although this is not the point of this petition, I have high hopes that someday cannabis will be made federally legal so that we as a people will be able to not only use it, but benefit from it.

Thank you to all of you who have taken the time and consideration to read this. PLEASE sign if you agree.
