Nonviolent Peaceforce started this petition to President Donald J. Trump and

It wasn't long ago that images of the siege on Aleppo and East Ghouta left us asking when the violence and nightmare in Syria would end. Aleppo had a population of 200k, and East Ghouta 400k. Idlib has a population of 3 million, and with valid fears that chemical gas will once again be released, there is no place left for Idlib's residents to seek safety and shelter from what the UN expects to be the "worst humanitarian catastrophe" of the 21st century. A war that has already cost so many lives that officials stopped counting in 2016 when the number was estimated to be 476k, which was calculated before Aleppo and before East Ghouta, is about to get even costlier. Those that have not been killed, have been displaced with an estimate of at least 11 million since the conflict began in 2011.

Conflict is inevitable, but violence is not. There are other avenues available to all parties involved in this coming bloodbath. There is still time for diplomatic, nonviolent strategies to be attempted before another bloodbath occurs in a country that has already experienced so much loss and devastation. At Nonviolent Peaceforce, we know that there are effective unarmed approaches to transform conflict.

The world is watching, and we demand that  Syrian President Assad,  Russian President Putin, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Turkish President Erdoğan, and U.S President Trump as well as the leaders of Hezzbolah, Daesh, al Nussra, Tahrir al-Sham and other rebel groups implement an immediate ceasefire followed by diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict with unarmed methods to protect civilians.

In absence of that, we are calling on Turkey to reopen their borders to allow Idlib's civilian population a place to escape the violence, and for the UN, EU, and the U.S to increase their support for the possible influx of refugees.

It is no longer acceptable in the 21st century to see a manmade "humanitarian catastrophe" coming and say there was no other option. There are options, and as citizens of this world, we are demanding that they be pursued to stave off further bloodshed of so many innocents.
