Being quarantined is stressful. Now parents are expected to home educate while maintaining a full-time job. If it were for 2 weeks, that's one thing. However, some of these parents will be expected to do this until the end of the school year. This is too much strain on families to sustain adequate mental health. Many families are also facing additional financial stresses due to the loss of employment and having to serve unlimited snacks and meals for their children all day long. The increase in domestic violence is already occurring and we need to keep our children and families safe and happy. This extra 45-60 days of distance learning is not worth the consequences many children and families are facing.

I am a 4th & 5th-grade science teacher at a private school and I also have a blended family of 6 school-aged children. Trying to find a quiet space to work and for kids to do their school isn't our only challenge. Teaching 76 young children via a computer is asking a lot from these kids who are just learning to navigate technology on their own. Many feel emotionally stressed as do their parents. While some may be adequately maintaining momentum, others have frozen, anxiety has set in, and fear is setting in. This is too much to ask of such young children. These parents didn't choose to homeschool for a reason. Why should they be forced to do that in addition to trying to maintain quality work for their employment?

My 2nd-grade child has gone from interacting with peers and having adult attention all day long, to now being stuck in front of a computer for 6 hours, many of those hours alone. She does not have the experience to navigate a computer and needs assistance. Who is to help her while the adults are trying to work and the older students have their own responsibilities? She is lonely. She is sad. She needs attention during a time where everything is uncertain for her.

Please end our year early and "forgive" our missed days. We promise to read and do math problems until next year!
